What is the Pong Research warranty for your products – how long does it last and what does it cover?

We stand behind our Pong cases, and your satisfaction is very important to us! At any time in the first 60 days after purchase, if your Pong case does not meet your expectations, you can return it for a replacement or refund. Currently, we are only able to refund the original purchaser. If it was a gift, we are happy to exchange the case for another case at the same price. Also, if at any time in the first 180 days, your case becomes defective or damaged, please let us know and we will replace the case free of charge!.

How does Pong technology work?

Your mobile phone device has inbuilt antennas that enable it to communicate with cellular networks. These antennas emit a potentially harmful microwave frequency radiation that can be absorbed by the body.

Each Pong case is equipped with technology that redirects and redistributes this radiation towards the back of the device and away from your head and body. This then provides more signal availability for device connectivity, leading to improved performance and battery life.

Pong’s technology is internationally patented and works by a process of electromagnetic interaction using passive antennas (known as a Coupled Antenna System) embedded in each case.

The Pong antenna technology is uniquely designed for optimum performance in the material in which it is embedded. As a result, our different case collections (Classic, Rugged and Select), which differ slightly in construction, have different Pong antennas and therefore different SAR reductions.

How does the Pong iPad case reduce your radiation exposure?

Embedded within the Pong iPad case are two flexible printed circuits: one of the iPad’s Wi-Fi antenna located near the bottom of the iPad; and one for the cellular antenna located near the top of the iPad. The emitted radio-frequency (RF) radiation is most intense closest to the iPad’s antennas. Pong’s patented technology is precisely engineered to “couple” or grab this spatially localized radiation source and spread or diffuse it into a less intense field pattern. The result is that the Pong case reduces your body SAR (Specific Absorption Rate), which is a measure of the rate at which your body absorbs RF power.

What makes Pong different from other “anti-radiation” mobile phone products on the market?

Other products that claim to reduce radiation exposure by shielding, blocking, absorbing or “neutralising” mobile phone radiation either aren’t effective or can actually increase your radiation exposure and lead to a sub-optimal battery performance. How?

Typical market “anti-radiation” mobile phone products actually weaken the device’s signal making the device work harder and use more power as it struggles to communicate with the cell tower. This can increase the radiation exposure to the user, as well as shorten the battery life. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued warnings against the use of such products. .

In the event Pong technology is not available for your particular mobile device, Pong Research recommends the following precautions to help protect yourself and your loved ones from unnecessary mobile phone radiation exposure:

    • 1. Follow the phone manufacturer’s warnings found in your owner’s manual and avoid using or carrying your mobile phone against your head or body at all times.
    • 2. Follow FTC advice to avoid using products on your mobile phone that claim to “shield” mobile phone emissions, because they may interfere with the phone’s signal. This may cause it to draw even more power and possibly emit more radiation. (Pong does not shield radiation. Instead it redirects and redistributes radiation, to reduce your exposure.)
    • 3. Do not use a mobile phone case unless it has been proven not to increase SAR or weaken your mobile phone signal. Many standard cases can weaken the mobile phone’s signal, shorten battery life, or increase radiation emissions.
    • 4. Children should only use mobile phones for emergencies. mobile phone radiation penetrates a child’s brain more deeply than an adult brain.
    • 5. Whenever possible, text rather than talk. If a call must be made, use the speakerphone or a wired headset.
    • 6. Limit the length of your mobile phone conversations. Use a corded landline phone if available. Do not use a cordless phone for long conversations.
    • 7. Switch sides regularly during a mobile phone call to reduce radiation exposure to one side of your head.
    • 8. Avoid using your mobile phone when the signal is weak or when moving at high speed, such as in a car or train. These scenarios increase the transmit power of the phone in an attempt to connect to the nearest cell tower.
    • 9. When making a call, wait for the call to connect before placing the phone next to the ear. The phone emits the most intense radiation during the initial connection, then lowers its power once a connection is established.
    10. Turn your mobile phone off or put it in airplane mode when not in use. If you must leave your mobile phone on at night, keep your mobile phone away from your head and body while you are sleeping. Your phone continues to emit radiation even when you are not making a call.

Since Pong cases disperse more radiation to the back of the device, would it give higher exposure to people nearby? Should I stay away from my children when I am using it? If so, how far away?

mobile phone radiation is most intense in areas right next to the antenna, it is this intense radiation that poses the greatest risk to the users, and that Pong redirects and redistributes. The further you are away from your phone, the intensity of mobile phone radiation and your risk for exposure decreases.

In fact, mobile phone radiation is >100 times less intense at a distance of 10 cm away from the mobile phone antenna compared to 1 cm. So as long as your children and other people stay a few inches away from your mobile device when in use, the radiation intensity they are exposed to is very low and should not raise any known health concerns.

Since Pong cases redirect the radiation away from the user’s head, does Pong affect the mobile device’s ability to communicate with the cell tower?

Yes – Pong actually improves your communication with the cell tower. How?

Without a Pong case, a mobile phone user can be absorbing up to 68% of the radiation that your phone is emitting. This actually creates a dead zone on the other side of your head (see the dark blue indent in Figure 1 below) which reduces the strength of the signal on the opposite side of the head to where your phone is being held.

Pong’s technology modifies the radiation pattern around your mobile phone – so that less radiation is absorbed by you. In doing so, it also creates a more diffuse signal pattern that can more easily propagate around the head. The result is a more uniform radiation pattern even on the side of the head opposite the phone, which enables better communication with the nearest cell tower. This improved connectivity leads to optimised battery life as the mobile phone will then be working “less hard” for the connection. The impact of Pong’s technology on the signal pattern can be seen in Figure 2 below.

If the radiation from a mobile phone with a Pong case on it is directed to the back of the phone, how will this affect the hand that is holding the phone?

Although the total field strength of microwave radiation may increase in the direction away from the user, the redistribution of the near field radiation by the Pong case ensures that radiation from the back of the phone is dispersed in a less intense field pattern. As a result SAR is also reduced on the back of the phone for a hand or body.

How does Pong affect the signal strength of my mobile device?

Does Pong affect the battery life of my mobile device?

A Pong case can improve your battery life. How?

Your phone’s battery life is directly related to the power drain of the device – which is impacted by two things: how frequently you use your device and how far away you are from the cell tower. Poor signal strength makes your mobile device work harder to communicate with the cell tower by transmitting more power, which shortens the battery life of your device. Pong optimises the signal strength of your mobile device by redirecting and redistributing, rather than reducing, your mobile phone’s radiation. This means that your device doesn’t have to transmit more power to communicate with the cell tower. As a result, the battery life of your device with a Pong case may be improved.

Other products that shield or block radiation will force your mobile device to work harder to communicate, and therefore will drain your battery faster.

Can I use a Pong case designed for a specific phone model for other phones?

No. Each mobile device model has a distinctive antenna structure inside. Every Pong case contains a custom-engineered Coupled Antenna System that only works with the unique antenna structure of a particular model of mobile device. Avoid using your Pong case for other models of mobile devices even it can physically fit. Pong is not responsible for any unknown effects to your radiation exposure or signal strength due to unintended use.

Regarding the Pong iPad case, how does it protect you if the iPad is on your lap while using it?

The Pong technology inside the case redistributes the radiation from both the iPad’s Cellular and Wi-Fi antennas, effectively spreading the signal thus reducing the intensity, while making more signal available for communication to the cell tower or router (for Wi-Fi). This results in a lower level of radiation exposure for your body.

Would my Pong case work if I travel overseas?

Yes. Pong cases are designed to work for all U.S. and international frequency bands. Your Pong case will work no matter where you go and which network you use.

What are Pong cases made of?

Pong cases are light, durable and made from high quality materials.

Each case contains a Coupled Antenna System (CAS) consisting of a copper antenna on a polyamide substrate, this is embedded in a form-fitting, lightweight polycarbonate shell which offers outstanding strength and durability. Pong applies a unique paint finishes to each case that provide a high quality look and feel.

Pong cases are easy to clean, and won’t stretch or crack from normal use.

Pong cases are designed in Leesburg, Virginia, U.S.A. (near Washington D.C.), and manufactured by multiple partners in Taiwan.

Should I worry about mobile phone radiation?

The increased reliance on mobile phones, even among children, many of whom spend hours on the phone, or carry devices on their person has led to an increasing concern about the health effects of mobile phone radiation, especially for children, long term users and heavy users. As yet, there is insufficient research data on whether there is a definitive link to cancer or other adverse health effects from long-term and regular mobile phone use.

However, the body of evidence supporting a concern is growing:

  • In 2011, the Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that shows that just 50 minutes of mobile phone use affects brain activity in the area of brain closest to the phone.
  • In May 2011, scientific evidence indicating adverse health effects of mobile phone radiation prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to classify mobile phone radiation as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”, in the same category as lead and engine exhaust.
  • A 2012 U.S. study by researchers from Yale School of Medicine found that exposure to radiation from mobile phones during pregnancy affects the brain development of offspring, potentially leading to hyperactivity.
  • A growing body of research also indicates that exposure to mobile phone radiation may lead to decreases in sperm count, sperm motility and vitality.
  • Recent studies have also shown that the current mobile phone certification process may substantially underestimate radiation absorption for most mobile phone users, especially children and smaller adults.

Given these concerns, Pong believes you should adopt a “precautionary principle” in practice. We recommend you take preventive and pro-active approaches, such as using a Pong case on your mobile device to protect you and your loved ones from potentially harmful mobile phone radiation.

Pong claims to reduce SAR by up to 95% below the FCC limit. But what is SAR? What is the FCC SAR limit?

SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate and is a metric for measuring the rate at which mobile phone radiation is absorbed by the human body. In the United States, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) sets the limit for public exposure to mobile phone radiation to be a SAR level of 1.6 watts per kilogram, averaged over 1 gram of body tissue. This means that for a phone to receive FCC certification and be sold in the U.S., its maximum SAR level must not exceed 1.6 watts per kilogram.

Why do different case collections have different SAR reductions?

The Pong antenna technology is uniquely designed for optimum performance in the material in which it is embedded. As a result, our different case collections (e.g. Classic, Rugged and Select), which differ slightly in construction, have different Pong antennas and therefore different SAR reductions.

How can I find out the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of my mobile phone?

The FCC maintains a SAR database, and to start checking on your device you’ll need its FCC ID number. It’s usually on the case of the mobile phone, although you might have to remove its battery pack to find the number. Once you have the number, you can go to the FCC web site (http://transition.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid/) and follow the instructions.

Most manufacturers also include the information in their product manuals as well as on their websites. Other sites also provide access to the SAR levels of mobile phones, including CNET (http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phone-radiation-levels/).

Which way should my phone face when carrying it in my pants or shirt pocket?

We advise keeping your phone away from your body, but if you must, when placing your phone in your pocket, make sure that the front of the phone is facing your body and that the back of the Pong case is facing away from your body. This way the radiation is being redirected away from your body.

When was Pong Technology developed?

The Pong technology was first developed ten years ago, but due to the complex form factors of devices at the time, it was not developed commercially. With the recent evolution to flat smart phone device form factors, we now have the opportunity for the Pong technology to work with your devices to help you protect you from cellular radiation.

Is the Pong Technology heat sensitive?

The case will withstand heat to a certain degree. However, we do not recommend leaving it out in direct sunlight or in heat over an extended period of time.

If I drop my phone will the Pong Case protect it? Do you guarantee my phone won’t be damaged?

Each Pong case is designed to protect covered areas of your phone by absorbing most of the impact from a drop. By design, some Pong cases might crack or split before the covered areas of your phone are damaged. Pong cannot guarantee, however, that your phone will not be damaged as a result of impact, accident, or excessive wear and tear since we cannot insure the work of other manufacturers. Is the front glass protected so that if the phone is laid on a flat surface, only the case would touch, not the glass of the phone?

At a minimum, our cases are designed so that if you lay your phone on a flat surface, the edges of the case will keep the front glass of the phone from touching it. The glass is thus protected.

Does the Pong Case have a cutout to accommodate most headphone jacks?

As a featured design, your Pong case permits easy access to all controls and ports, as well as to the headphone jack area. The Pong case is designed to work with the accessories supplied with your phone. 3rd party accessories may not be compatible.

Does Pong warranty the functioning of the antenna embedded in the case?

Pong warranties the troubleshooting of the antenna if the antenna embedded in the case does not work properly.

Pong’s replacement and return guarantees exclude (a) incidents of damage that may have resulted from misuse of, or abuse to, your Pong case and (b) products purchased from anyone besides Pong. If you bought your Pong case through Amazon.com, your replacement or return request must include a copy of your original invoice. If you purchased your Pong case from an authorised reseller or distributor, its policies — and not Pong’s — will apply to any replacement, return, or other claims. Pong’s guarantees and warranties do not apply to products bought through eBay or any other auction–style merchant, or from sources not expressly authorised by Pong. Pong disclaims all liability for any indirect, incidental, or punitive damages arising from its products —however obtained.
